Top 5 Maternity Poses

Pregnancy is such a special season of life; a time filled with anticipation, excitement, and love. Maternity photography is all about celebrating this incredible journey and capturing the connection between you, your bump, and your growing family.

For many expecting mums, stepping in front of the camera can feel a little daunting: “How do I pose? What if I feel awkward?” The truth is, maternity portraits don’t need to feel stiff or staged. With the right poses and gentle direction, the results will look effortless, elegant, and uniquely you.

Here are my top five maternity poses that create timeless and flattering images every time:

  1. The Belly Cradle

This classic maternity pose is all about connection. I’ll guide you to gently place your hands below and above your bump — almost like you’re cradling your baby. It’s simple, elegant, and draws the eye to your beautiful silhouette. A soft smile down at your bump makes this pose even more emotive.

2. The Silhouette

Lighting is everything when it comes to maternity portraits, and one of the most striking poses is a simple side-on silhouette. By positioning you in profile, we highlight the natural curve of your bump in a dramatic and artistic way. This pose is timeless and looks stunning in both black-and-white and colour.

BONUS TIP! Bring a flowing dress, shawl or even just a piece of fabric for added windswept glamour

3. The Sitting Pose

Not all maternity images need to be standing. Sitting poses can feel relaxed, comfortable, and natural — whether cross-legged on the floor, perched on a chair, or reclined slightly on a sofa. From this position, I’ll often have you rest your hands gently on your bump or interact with your partner, creating tender and grounded portraits.

4. The Comfy Leaning Pose

As much as I love a well picked out outfit and some precision lighting; the casual shots are the best! Dig out some comfy clothes, like this matching set, lean against a wall and be authentically you.

5. The Bonding Pose

Often soon to be mums come visit me for their maternity session in the last few weeks before their baby is due, this is the perfect time to reflect on the whole journey! I’ll gently guide you to remember things, and talk to me about aspects of your pregnancy and relationship as well as questions for the future.

BONUS POSE: The Couple Pose

They say it takes two to tango so bring them to the session with you! I get it, ‘he hates being in pictures’. But I promise to make it the most painless experience and that in the end dad will look back and be glad he came along.

Why Posing Matters in Maternity Photography

The best maternity portraits are the ones that not only flatter your body but also capture your emotions — the excitement, love, and anticipation of meeting your little one. These five poses are my favourites because they highlight the beauty of pregnancy while keeping the experience relaxed and comfortable.

Every woman’s pregnancy journey is different, which is why I always tailor my approach to your comfort and style.
